Nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans)

The Nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) is a tropical evergreen that produces two valuable spices: nutmeg and mace. Native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia, the tree bears aromatic, yellow-brown seeds (nutmeg) encased in a red seed covering (mace). Nutmeg is used for flavoring in cooking, baking, and traditional medicine, while mace adds a similar, slightly more delicate spice. The tree thrives in humid, warm climates and takes several years to mature and produce harvestable seeds. Its fragrant seeds have been prized since ancient times, but overharvesting has made sustainable cultivation important.
