Nut allergies
Nut allergies are immune system reactions to proteins found in nuts, such as peanuts and tree nuts like almonds or cashews. When someone with a nut allergy consumes or is exposed to these nuts, their immune system mistakenly identifies the proteins as harmful and triggers an allergic response. This can cause symptoms ranging from itching, swelling, and skin rashes to more severe reactions like difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis. Nut allergies are common and often lifelong, so affected individuals must avoid nuts and read food labels carefully. Medical treatment often includes emergency medication like epinephrine for severe reactions.
