Nuclear Reactor Types
Nuclear reactors are devices that harness the energy from nuclear fission, where atoms split to release heat. Common types include pressurized water reactors (PWRs), which use high-pressure water to cool and stabilize; boiling water reactors (BWRs), where water boils directly in the reactor core to generate steam; and fast neutron reactors (FNRs), which use fast neutrons to sustain the reaction and can recycle fuel. There are also advanced designs like molten salt reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs) that aim for higher efficiency and safety. Each type has unique benefits, applications, and safety features.
