NPR1 (Nonexpressor of PR Genes 1)
NPR1 (Nonexpressor of PR Genes 1) is a plant protein that plays a critical role in plant immune responses. It acts as a key regulator in activating defense genes when a plant detects a pathogen or stress. When a plant is attacked, NPR1 moves into the cell nucleus and helps turn on specific genes that produce protective proteins, including pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins. This process enhances the plant's ability to resist infections. NPR1’s function is central to the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) response, allowing plants to develop long-lasting immunity after initial pathogen exposure.
