Northern blotting
Northern blotting is a laboratory technique used to detect specific RNA sequences within a mixture. It involves extracting RNA from cells, separating the RNA molecules by size using gel electrophoresis, and then transferring them onto a membrane. A labeled DNA or RNA probe that is complementary to the target RNA is then applied, allowing it to hybridize or bind to the specific RNA sequence. By visualizing the label, scientists can determine if and where the target RNA is present, helping to study gene expression patterns in different tissues or conditions.
