Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Infection

Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection is caused by bacteria called mycobacteria, which are different from the bacteria that cause tuberculosis. These bacteria are found in soil, water, and environments worldwide. NTM infections often affect the lungs, causing symptoms similar to pneumonia, like cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath. They can also impact skin or other tissues. While NTM bacteria are usually not contagious person-to-person, they can cause illness mainly in individuals with weakened immune systems or lung disease. Proper diagnosis and treatment involve identifying the bacteria through testing and using specific antibiotics to control the infection.
