Noche Triste
Noche Triste, or "Sad Night," refers to a significant event in 1520 during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. After months of tense interactions, Hernán Cortés and his men attempted to escape from Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital, due to rising hostilities. They were ambushed by Aztec warriors on the night of July 30. Despite efforts to flee, many Spaniards were killed or captured, marking a major setback for the Spanish. Noche Triste illustrates the complexities of the encounter between European conquerors and indigenous civilizations and highlights the challenges faced during the conquest of the Aztecs.
