NMDA Receptor Antibodies

NMDA receptor antibodies are immune proteins produced by the body's immune system that mistakenly target and attack NMDA receptors in the brain. These receptors are essential for communication between brain cells and play a key role in thoughts, memory, and behavior. When these antibodies attack the receptors, it can lead to neurological and psychiatric symptoms such as confusion, abnormal movements, or behavioral changes. This condition, known as anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, is often treatable with immunotherapy. Detecting these antibodies helps diagnose the disorder and guide appropriate treatment.
