Nixon resigns

Nixon resigning refers to President Richard Nixon stepping down from office in 1974 due to the Watergate scandal. This scandal involved a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and cover-up efforts that revealed corruption and abuse of power. As evidence mounted, Nixon faced imminent impeachment and removal from office. To avoid this, he chose to resign voluntarily, making him the first U.S. president to do so. His resignation took effect on August 8, 1974, and Vice President Gerald Ford assumed the presidency.
