Nile Basin Initiative

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a collaborative effort among countries that share the Nile River—such as Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and others—to manage and develop its water resources sustainably. Established in 1999, the NBI aims to promote regional cooperation, equitable use of water, and joint projects for sustainable development, agriculture, and energy. By working together, these nations seek to prevent conflicts over water, improve livelihoods, and ensure the river benefits everyone fairly while protecting the environment. It emphasizes dialogue, transparency, and shared responsibility in managing one of Africa’s most vital water sources.
