Nationalist Party (Kuomintang)
The Nationalist Party, known as the Kuomintang (KMT), is a Chinese political party founded in 1912. It played a key role in early 20th-century China, opposing warlordism and later the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Under leader Sun Yat-sen and later Chiang Kai-shek, the KMT aimed to modernize and unify China. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the CCP in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it established a government. The party has been influential in Taiwan’s political landscape, promoting Chinese nationalism and democracy, and has shifted towards a more moderate stance in recent years.
