National Revolutionary Unity (URNG)
The National Revolutionary Unity (URNG) was a guerrilla movement in Guatemala active mainly during the 1980s. It was formed as a coalition of leftist rebel groups aiming to challenge the government’s military dictatorship and address social inequalities. The URNG sought land reform, improved rights for indigenous populations, and social justice. It fought a prolonged civil conflict, which resulted in significant violence and instability. In 1996, the URNG signed peace accords with the government, transitioning into a political organization committed to democratic processes and reintegration into mainstream politics.
