National Prison Rape Elimination Commission
The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) was established in 2003 by the U.S. Congress to address and prevent sexual abuse in correctional facilities. Its primary goal is to develop national standards aimed at eliminating prison rape and ensuring the safety of inmates. The commission conducted research, gathered data, and created guidelines to protect vulnerable populations in prisons and jails. In 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice implemented these standards, which emphasize accountability, prevention, and victim support to create safer environments for incarcerated individuals. By focusing on these issues, the NPREC aims to improve conditions in the correctional system.
