NADPH oxidase

NADPH oxidase is an enzyme found in immune cells that helps fight infections. It works by converting oxygen into reactive molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS), like superoxide. These ROS are toxic to bacteria, viruses, and fungi, helping the immune system kill invading microbes. NADPH oxidase is essential for a rapid and effective immune response. When it functions properly, it protects the body; if defective, it can lead to increased infection risk, as seen in conditions like chronic granulomatous disease.
