Myeloma Protein
Myeloma protein, also known as monoclonal protein or M-protein, is an abnormal antibody produced excessively by malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. These proteins are usually measurable in the blood or urine and serve as markers for diagnosing and monitoring the disease. While normal plasma cells produce diverse antibodies to fight infections, myeloma cells generate large amounts of identical (monoclonal) proteins that can interfere with normal immune functions and damage organs. Detecting and quantifying myeloma protein helps assess disease activity and response to treatment.
