Myanmar's political reforms
Myanmar's political reforms involve transitioning from military rule towards a more open, democratic system. Starting in 2011, the military loosened control, allowing for elected civilian government institutions and political parties, most notably the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi. These reforms included easing censorship, releasing political prisoners, and holding elections in 2015. However, the military retained significant power through constitutional provisions, and progress was interrupted by setbacks like the 2021 military coup. Overall, reforms aimed at increased civilian participation and democratic governance, but challenges remain in achieving full, stable democracy.
