Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF)
The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) is a political and militant organization founded in 1972 to advocate for greater autonomy for the Moro people (Muslims) in the southern Philippines. They sought independence or federalism to address longstanding issues of cultural, political, and economic marginalization. The MNLF engaged in armed conflict with the Philippine government for several years, resulting in peace agreements and autonomous arrangements, such as the signing of the 1996 Final Peace Agreement. While some members continue to push for full independence, others participate in political processes, making the MNLF a significant force in regional peace efforts and Moro identity politics.
