Moon Illusion

The Moon Illusion is a perceptual phenomenon where the Moon appears larger near the horizon than when it is higher in the sky, even though its actual size remains constant. This illusion arises from how our brains interpret the Moon's size relative to surrounding objects, the way our eyes perceive the sky as a flattened dome, and mental cues about distance and size. When near the horizon, the Moon looks larger because our brain compares it to familiar terrestrial objects and perceives it as closer, whereas when overhead, it seems smaller because there are fewer size references.
