Military Dictatorship (Brazil)
The Brazilian Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) was a period when the military government controlled the country, suspending democracy and civil liberties. It began with a coup that ousted President João Goulart, citing fears of communism and political instability. The regime emphasized security and economic development but also suppressed political opposition, censored media, and used force against dissent. It maintained power through military and institutional control, limiting freedoms and guiding policies without popular consent. The dictatorship ended with a gradual return to democracy, culminating in the election of a civilian government in 1985.
