Military Coup of 1952
The Military Coup of 1952 was when the Indian Army, led by then-Lieutenant Colonel (later General) K.M. Cariappa, overthrew the government of the princely state of Hyderabad. Hyderabad was a large, independent-spirited region ruled by the Nizam, who wanted to remain separate from India. Fearing instability and invasion, the Indian government launched Operation Polo, military action that integrated Hyderabad into India. The coup ensured a quick and peaceful annexation, preventing a prolonged conflict and establishing Indian sovereignty over Hyderabad. This event was significant in consolidating India’s unity after independence.
