Middle ear pressure regulation involves the Eustachian tube, a small canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. Its function is to equalize pressure between the ear and the external environment, especially during changes in altitude or pressure. When there's a difference, the Eustachian tube opens briefly—often when swallowing, yawning, or during chewing—to allow air to flow in or out, balancing the pressure.
