METs (metabolic equivalents)

METs, or metabolic equivalents, are units used to measure the intensity of physical activities based on how much energy they require compared to resting. One MET represents the energy expenditure while sitting quietly, roughly 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour. For example, walking at a slow pace might be around 2 METs, meaning it requires twice the energy of resting. Higher MET values indicate more vigorous activities. This measurement helps quantify and compare the effort involved in different exercises, making it easier to plan and understand physical activity levels for health and fitness.
