Metropolitan Board of Works
The Metropolitan Board of Works was a governing body in London, established in 1855 to oversee public works and infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and sewer systems. Its primary aim was to address the sanitation and urban challenges of a rapidly growing city during the Industrial Revolution. The Board played a crucial role in modernizing London, improving public health, and managing urban development. It was eventually dissolved in 1889, replaced by the London County Council, which took on broader responsibilities for the city's governance and public services.
