Metis
Metis refers to the Indigenous peoples of Canada who have mixed Indigenous and European ancestry, primarily from the historical fur trade era. They have a distinct culture that incorporates elements from both Indigenous and settler traditions, often characterized by unique languages, arts, and governance systems. Metis people have their own identity and rights, which have been recognized in Canadian law, including land rights and self-government. The Metis Nation works to preserve and promote Metis culture and heritage while advocating for the rights of Metis communities across Canada.
