Methane Production
Methane production occurs when organic materials, such as plants, waste, or manure, break down in environments with little or no oxygen, like wetlands, landfills, or the digestive systems of ruminant animals. Microorganisms known as methanogens decompose these materials, releasing methane gas as a byproduct. This natural process plays a role in the Earth's carbon cycle, but it also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, impacting global warming. Methods like capturing methane from landfills and wastewater can convert this gas into useful energy, reducing environmental impact.
