MERRF Syndrome

MERRF Syndrome, or Myoclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers, is a rare genetic disorder affecting the nervous system and muscles. It is caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA, which is essential for producing energy in cells. Symptoms typically include muscle weakness, seizures, coordination problems, and distinctive red fibers in muscle tissue when viewed under a microscope. The condition varies in severity and can lead to progressive disability. Since it affects energy production, MERRF predominantly impacts tissues with high energy demands, like muscles and the brain. There is currently no cure, but treatments focus on managing symptoms.
