Meristems

Meristems are specialized regions in plants where cells continuously divide and generate new cells. These growth zones are responsible for the plant's growth in length (apical meristems found at tips of roots and shoots) and in thickness (lateral meristems like the cambium). Cells in meristems remain adaptable, allowing the plant to develop new tissues and organs over time. This ongoing cell division enables plants to grow taller, develop branches, roots, and flowers, and repair damage. Essentially, meristems are the plant's growth factories, providing the foundation for plant development and regeneration.
