A meristem is a region in plants where new cells are actively dividing, allowing the plant to grow. Think of it as a growth zone, similar to stem cells in animals, that continuously produces new cells which then develop into various tissues like leaves, stems, or roots. Meristems are found at the tips of roots and shoots, enabling plants to elongate, and in some parts, growth is also possible laterally, thickening the plant. This constant cell division at meristems is essential for the plant's development, repair, and overall growth throughout its life.
