Melanocytes

Melanocytes are specialized cells located in the skin that produce a pigment called melanin. This pigment gives skin, hair, and eyes their color and helps protect against damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Melanocytes detect UV exposure and increase melanin production to shield underlying tissues. These cells are found primarily in the outer skin layer (epidermis) and work in coordination with other skin cells to determine pigmentation. Variations in melanocyte activity and melanin production contribute to the wide range of human skin tones and are important for maintaining skin health and protection.
