Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome occurs when a newborn inhales a mixture of meconium—early stool—along with amniotic fluid into their lungs around the time of birth. This can happen if the baby is stressed or distressed before delivery. The inhaled meconium can block airways and cause inflammation, leading to breathing difficulties, low oxygen levels, and potential lung infections. Treatment may include oxygen support, lung drainage, or ventilation. While often manageable, it requires prompt medical attention to ensure the baby's lungs function properly.
