MCAD Deficiency
MCAD deficiency (Medium-Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase deficiency) is a genetic condition where the body cannot properly break down certain fats into energy, especially during fasting or illness. This disruption affects medium-chain fatty acids, which are usually used for energy when glucose is low. Without this process, individuals may experience symptoms like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), lethargy, vomiting, or even coma during periods of fasting or illness. Management typically involves avoiding prolonged fasting and maintaining a balanced diet to ensure adequate energy intake, helping prevent potentially severe episodes.
