Maze Prison
Maze Prison, also known as H-Block, was a high-security detention facility near Belfast, Northern Ireland, operational from 1971 to 2000. It primarily held Republican and Loyalist prisoners involved in the Troubles, a conflict over Northern Ireland’s political status. The prison was notorious for its harsh conditions and the protests, such as the 1981 hunger strikes by Irish republican prisoners demanding political status. It symbolized the conflict and divisions in Northern Ireland. The prison was closed in 2000 as part of a peace process, and its site has since been redeveloped.
