Maxillary Sinus

The maxillary sinus is a hollow, air-filled space located in the cheekbone, on either side of the nose. It is part of the paranasal sinus system, which helps humidify and warm inhaled air, improve voice resonance, and reduce skull weight. The sinuses are lined with mucous membrane that produce mucus to trap dust and germs, draining into the nose. Sometimes, these sinuses can become inflamed or infected, leading to sinusitis, which may cause facial pain, pressure, congestion, and headaches. Overall, the maxillary sinus plays a vital role in respiratory health and facial anatomy.
