Matilda (Empress Matilda)
Empress Matilda (1102-1167) was a key historical figure in medieval England, the daughter of King Henry I. She became the first woman to claim the English throne, although she faced significant opposition. After her father's death, a civil war known as the Anarchy erupted between her supporters and those of her cousin, Stephen of Blois, who seized the throne. Matilda's struggle for power emphasized the challenges women faced in leadership roles during this era. Despite never being crowned queen, she played a crucial role in establishing her son, Henry II, as king, thereby influencing the future of the English monarchy.
