Maryland District Courts

Maryland District Courts are the state's limited jurisdiction trial courts that handle a variety of civil and criminal cases. They primarily deal with minor criminal offenses, traffic violations, small claims (up to $5,000), landlord-tenant disputes, and certain family law matters like child support. These courts function to provide a streamlined, accessible forum for resolving everyday legal issues quickly and efficiently. They do not handle felonies or serious criminal cases, which are taken to higher courts. District Courts also conduct preliminary hearings and issue protective orders, serving as an essential part of Maryland’s judicial system for everyday legal matters.
