Mary I of England
Mary I of England, also known as "Bloody Mary," was the queen from 1553 to 1558. The daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, she aimed to restore Roman Catholicism after her father established the Church of England. Her reign was marked by the persecution of Protestants and the execution of many whom she deemed heretics, leading to her infamous nickname. Mary married Philip II of Spain, which further fueled unrest. Her rule ended when she died childless, and her half-sister Elizabeth I succeeded her, establishing Protestantism firmly in England.
