Marikana massacre
The Marikana massacre occurred in August 2012 in South Africa when police opened fire on striking mine workers demanding higher wages. The workers were protesting at Lonmin's platinum mine in Marikana, and tensions escalated after days of unrest. Police shot and killed 34 miners and injured many more, in what became one of South Africa’s most tragic and controversial events. The massacre highlighted issues of labor rights, economic inequality, and police conduct, sparking widespread criticism and debate about social justice and governmental response to protests.
