Maori horticulture

Maori horticulture refers to traditional Polynesian farming practices developed by the Maori people of New Zealand. It emphasizes sustainable cultivation of native crops like kumara (sweet potato), taro, yams, and gourds, often using sophisticated techniques such as ridging and terracing to improve soil fertility and water management. These practices are deeply rooted in respect for the land (“whenua”) and involve crop rotation, companion planting, and sacred sites called “papakainga.” Maori horticulture reflects a harmonious relationship with nature, ensuring food security and cultural preservation over generations through knowledge passed down orally.
