Manuela Malasaña

Manuela Malasaña was a young Madrid woman known for her role in the Spanish Trienio Liberal (1820-1823). She became a symbol of resistance after participating in protests against the oppressive Ferdinand VII's restored monarchy. During the uprising, she was captured and executed by firing squad at just 19 years old. Today, she is remembered as a martyr and a local legend in Madrid, especially associated with the vibrant Malasaña neighborhood, which is named after her. Her story embodies themes of bravery and sacrifice in the struggle for Spanish liberalism and democratic freedoms.
