Man-in-the-middle attack
A man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack occurs when a hacker secretly intercepts and possibly alters communications between two parties without their knowledge. Imagine sending a letter, but someone secretly opens it, reads or changes the message, and then passes it along. The sender and receiver believe they’re communicating directly, but the attacker is actually listening in or tampering with the information. This can happen with emails, messages, or even during online transactions. To protect against MITM attacks, using encrypted connections (like HTTPS) and strong security measures is essential, ensuring that communications remain private and unaltered.
