Malaya refers to a historical region in Southeast Asia that encompasses the Malay Peninsula, which includes parts of modern-day Malaysia and Thailand. The term gained prominence during British colonial rule when the British established protectorates in the area. In 1957, Malaya became independent and later merged with other territories to form Malaysia in 1963.
