Lords of Appeal in Ordinary
Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, also known as Law Lords, were senior judges appointed to serve in the UK's House of Lords, primarily to hear and decide important legal cases, especially appellate (appeal) cases. Their role was to ensure the development and consistency of the law. Established in the 19th century, they acted as the highest court of appeal in the UK until the Supreme Court was created in 2009, which now serves that function. The Law Lords were distinguished legal experts responsible for interpreting and shaping UK law at the highest level.
