Lord Stair

Lord Stair, formally known as Sir James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount Stair (1619–1695), was a prominent Scottish jurist and historian. He is best known for his influential work, "The Institutions of the Law of Scotland," which laid the foundation for Scottish legal principles by synthesizing common and civil law. His writings helped establish a coherent legal framework in Scotland and influenced legal thought in both Scotland and beyond. In addition to his legal contributions, he served as a scholar and held various political and judicial positions, including Lord President of the Court of Session.
