Lombard League
The Lombard League was an alliance formed in the late 12th century among cities in northern Italy, particularly in the Lombardy region. This coalition aimed to resist the attempts of the Holy Roman Empire to exert control over the region. The League united various city-states to protect their autonomy and interests. It played a significant role in the conflicts known as the Wars of the Lombard League, culminating in victories against imperial forces, which strengthened local governance and communal identities. The League is an important example of early self-organization among municipalities in medieval Europe.
