Lipoprotein(a)
Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a type of cholesterol particle in the blood that includes both fats and proteins. It naturally occurs in everyone’s blood and can contribute to the buildup of plaque in arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Unlike other cholesterol types, Lp(a) levels are mainly determined by genetics and tend to stay steady over time. High levels of Lp(a) can be a warning sign of cardiovascular risk, even if other cholesterol levels are normal. Managing overall heart health through lifestyle and, if necessary, medication can help reduce associated risks.
