Lipid bilayers
Lipid bilayers are thin structures that form the basic building blocks of cell membranes in living organisms. They consist of two layers of lipid molecules, which have a hydrophilic (water-attracting) "head" and two hydrophobic (water-repelling) "tails." This arrangement allows the bilayer to create a barrier that separates the inside of the cell from the outside environment while still allowing certain substances to pass through. Lipid bilayers play a crucial role in maintaining the cell’s integrity, facilitating communication, and transporting materials, thus supporting life and various cellular functions.
