Life Stage Theory

Life Stage Theory, often associated with psychologist Erik Erikson, posits that individuals progress through eight distinct stages from infancy to old age, each characterized by specific challenges and growth opportunities. These stages emphasize the psychological and emotional development that occurs at different ages, influencing social relationships, identity, and personal values. Each stage involves a conflict or task that must be resolved for healthy development—such as trust versus mistrust in infancy or integrity versus despair in old age—ultimately shaping our personalities and how we interact with the world throughout our lives.
