Liberation of the Netherlands
The Liberation of the Netherlands refers to the process of freeing the country from Nazi German occupation during World War II. This began with the Allied forces landing in Normandy in 1944 and continued through several key battles, including Operation Market Garden. The Netherlands faced severe hardships during the occupation, including food shortages. The liberation culminated in May 1945 when Canadian and other Allied troops entered the country, leading to the official end of Nazi control. This event is celebrated annually in the Netherlands on May 5th, known as Liberation Day, marking the restoration of freedom and sovereignty.
