The Liberal Party in the United Kingdom, established in the mid-19th century, aimed to promote individual liberties, free trade, and social progress. It emerged from the Whigs and became a major political force, advocating for reforms like women's suffrage and education. However, its influence declined in the 20th century as it struggled against the rise of the Labour Party and the Conservatives. In 1988, the party merged with the Social Democratic Party to form the Liberal Democrats, which continues to focus on civil liberties, social justice, and environmental issues in contemporary British politics.
