Leprosy (Hansen's Disease)

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s Disease, is a bacterial infection caused by *Mycobacterium leprae*. It primarily affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes, leading to skin sores, numbness, muscle weakness, and potential nerve damage. It spreads mainly through prolonged close contact with an untreated person. Fortunately, leprosy is curable with antibiotics, and early treatment can prevent long-term disabilities. While historically feared, it is not highly contagious, and with proper care and awareness, most people recover fully without transmission to others.
